SourceForge is where you go if you need to download software. It doesn't matter what you need, you'll find it. They've got something like 260 000 software downloads available and it's all open source. Much of the software is available for use on any platform including Mac and Windows machines.

Open source software doesn't necessarily come without charge (although most does) - it means that the software itself is open to modification by anyone. Some open source projects produce arguably the best software in the world, and is often the most commonly used in its class.

Admittedly some of the stuff will be a little ropey - I haven't had the privilege of trying out everything there. However, any and all self-respecting open source projects are available from sourceforge, and this includes things like eMule wich boasts over half a billion downloads.

Remember that, on the other side of the coin, if you have software that you want to promote and make publicly available then it is possible to do this from SourceForge too. There's also a massive community of people centered around the site and you will likely find contributers and support for your projects in here.

Without a doubt one of the Internet's most important resources for software and its development.
